Zaragoza Coach Hire: El Pilar, the Ebro and Aragón
Zaragoza sits halfway between Madrid and Barcelona, and many groups meet it on a touring route or for a fair. The old town around the Plaza del Pilar has a low-emission zone with clear rules, and a foreign coach must be registered before it enters.
Arriving by road or rail
Neither big airport is close. Terminal 4 at Madrid-Barajas is about 313 km, about 4 h 10 min by coach; Barcelona-El Prat's Terminal 1 is 299 km off, around four hours. Zaragoza's own airport, about 16 km west, is not one of the airports on this site. Many groups come by high-speed train to Zaragoza-Delicias, west of the centre, and meet the coach there.
A Madrid to Barcelona coach tour can stop here for the night, which keeps each day within the driver's hours.

The zone around El Pilar
The low-emission zone is the area bounded by the Coso, Calle Mayoral, Paseo de Echegaray y Caballero and Calle San Vicente de Paúl, with the Plaza del Pilar inside it. Its rules apply on weekdays between 08:00 and 20:00, with fines since 12 December 2025; evenings, weekends and public holidays are unrestricted.
A vehicle with any DGT label may enter. One without a label must be entered in the city's register. For a foreign coach, that works with either the manufacturer's emissions certificate or an environmental document issued in its home country. Do this before the trip. The city names no coach set-down for the Plaza del Pilar; the operator agrees a stopping place with it.

Coach access and parking rules in Zaragoza
- Zaragoza lies between Madrid and Barcelona. Madrid-Barajas airport (MAD, Terminal 4) is about 313 km by road from the Plaza del Pilar (about 4 h 10 min by coach), and Barcelona airport (BCN, Terminal 1) about 299 km (about 4 h). Zaragoza's own airport (ZAZ) is about 16 km west of the centre (about 25 min).
- Trains: Zaragoza-Delicias is the high-speed station on the Madrid–Barcelona line, west of the centre.
- Low-emission zone (ZBE): the zone covers the old town inside the Calle San Vicente de Paúl, the Coso, the Calle Mayoral and the Paseo de Echegaray y Caballero, so the Plaza del Pilar is inside it. It applies Monday to Friday, 08:00 to 20:00; at other times, at weekends and on public holidays it is open to all vehicles. Its final phase, with enforcement, began on 12 December 2025.
- ZBE access: vehicles with any DGT label (B, C, ECO or zero-emission) may enter; on cars and vans the label must be shown on the windscreen. Vehicles without a label must be entered in the city's ZBE register; foreign-registered vehicles can register with a manufacturer's emissions certificate or an environmental document from their country. A vehicle that enters by mistake and leaves within 15 minutes is not penalised. Check before travel.
- Fiestas del Pilar: the city's main festival is held around 12 October each year, with the Ofrenda de Flores on the Plaza del Pilar; expect road closures in the centre and heavy demand for hotels.
- Football: La Romareda has been demolished and is being rebuilt as the Nueva Romareda (to be named Ibercaja Romareda), targeted for the 2027-28 season. Until then Real Zaragoza plays at the temporary Ibercaja Estadio on the Expo site.
- No official coach set-down points or coach parks for the Plaza del Pilar were found: the operator confirms the stopping point with the city when booking.
Sights, fairs and match days
The Basílica del Pilar with its Goya frescoes and La Seo face each other across the square. The Aljafería, an 11th-century Islamic palace that now houses the Cortes de Aragón, shares a World Heritage listing with La Seo. Trade fairs take place at the Feria de Zaragoza grounds beside the A-2 motorway on the western side. For 2025-26 and 2026-27, Real Zaragoza's home is Ibercaja Estadio, a temporary ground on the old Expo site; La Romareda has been demolished, so never send a coach there.
The Fiestas del Pilar fill the city around 12 October each year, with the flower offering on the Plaza del Pilar and road closures in the centre.
Days out in Aragón
Belchite takes about 1 h, Fuendetodos, Goya's birthplace, and Huesca about 1 h 5 min, Tarazona 1 h 25 min. The Monasterio de Piedra is about 1 h 50 min away and Albarracín about 2 h 45 min: a long day with a fixed return time.
What organisers ask us
What happens if the coach enters the zone by mistake?
No fine is issued if a vehicle that drove in by mistake is out again within 15 minutes. A planned entry without a label still needs the registration.
Can we stop at the Plaza del Pilar during the Fiestas?
Expect closures in the centre and full hotels. The operator confirms a stopping point for the date, possibly further out than usual.
Is Zaragoza a day trip from Madrid?
Hardly. From Madrid-Barajas it is about 4 h 10 min each way by coach, which leaves little time in the city. A night in Zaragoza works better, or the high-speed train.
