Santiago de Compostela Coach Hire: Plans Around the Old Town
Pilgrim groups, school trips and parish outings all end at the same square. The old town of Santiago is pedestrian, so the coach plan is built around one short-stay bay, a walk of about 200 m and a separate answer for luggage.
The Xoán XXIII coach bay
Coaches use the city's coach bay (Dársena de autobuses) on Avenida de Xoán XXIII, about 200 m from the cathedral, run by the municipal transport company. Coaches may only drop and collect passengers there. Each entry gives 15 minutes, and a single paid ticket is valid for every entry that day.
Fifteen minutes goes quickly with fifty people. Have the group ready when the coach arrives and agree where to meet for the return. The city has no official long-stay coach park, so the operator arranges where the coach waits in between.

Hotels and luggage
No coach reaches a hotel door in the old town. Guests walk in from the bay and the luggage is handled separately, so ask the hotel how it moves cases. Hotels in the Ensanche around the Praza de Galicia, in San Lázaro or near the railway station are easier for the coach.
Since November 2025 the city treats the pedestrian historic centre as its low-emission zone. Traffic was already restricted there, so little changes for coaches; the operator confirms the current rule.

Coach access and parking rules in Santiago de Compostela
- Santiago de Compostela airport (SCQ, Rosalía de Castro) is about 14 km by road from the Praza do Obradoiro, about 30 min by coach in light traffic.
- Coach set-down: the Dársena de autobuses on the Avenida de Xoán XXIII, run by the city transport company, is about 200 m from the cathedral. Coaches may stop there only to set down and pick up passengers; each entry allows 15 minutes, and one paid ticket covers repeated entries on the same day.
- The old town is pedestrian, so groups walk in from the Xoán XXIII coach bay. Hotels in the old town are reached on foot, with luggage handled separately.
- Low-emission zone: the city has recognised the pedestrian historic centre as its low-emission zone (an amendment to its traffic ordinance in November 2025); general traffic was already restricted there. Check before travel.
- 2027 is a Holy Year (Ano Santo Xacobeo), because 25 July falls on a Sunday. Expect more pilgrims and groups, and heavy demand for hotels, from the end of 2026.
- No official long-stay coach park was found: after the set-down the operator arranges where the coach waits.
2027 is a Holy Year
25 July 2027 falls on a Sunday, which makes 2027 an Ano Santo Xacobeo. The city expects more pilgrims and groups, and hotel demand from the end of 2026. Secure the rooms first, then the coach. Groups that want to walk the final stretch can start at Monte do Gozo, east of the city on the Camino Francés route; agree a drop-off there with the operator.
Rías Baixas, the coast and Galicia's cities
Padrón is about 40 minutes away. Cambados and Pontevedra take about 1 h 10 min, Combarro and A Coruña about 1 h 15 min, Vigo 1 h 25 min. Fisterra is about 1 h 50 min each way and Muxía 1 h 35 min, so a day on the Costa da Morte is a long one.
What organisers ask us
How does the coach collect arrivals at Santiago airport?
The express area on the Arrivals level (P0) has a coach bay with 12 spaces behind its own barrier, as last published. From the airport to the Praza do Obradoiro is about 14 km, some 30 minutes by coach.
Can the coach wait at the Xoán XXIII bay?
No. It is a set-down and pick-up bay with 15 minutes per entry. The coach leaves after setting down and comes back for the return.
Which venues take congresses?
Congresses go to San Lázaro's Palacio de Congresos e Exposicións de Galicia or to the Cidade da Cultura on Monte Gaiás. Fontes do Sar is the indoor arena for sport and concerts.
