Team Travel by Coach, from Youth Squads to Clubs
A team needs seats for players and staff, and space for the kit. Start with those two numbers, then the fixture list, and the right vehicle usually follows.
Seats, kit bags and licences
Count bodies and bags separately. Fourteen players with a coach and a physio make 16, a full minibus, and a full minibus has little room left at the back for kit. Step up to a midi-coach of 29 to 35 seats or a full coach with underfloor holds, and the bags travel below. A vehicle for more than 16 passengers, or longer than 8 m, needs a category D driver; D1 is enough for the smaller minibuses.
On the motorway a coach may do 100 km/h, and 90 km/h on other roads outside towns, but only 80 km/h if anyone stands or there are no belts. Belts are compulsory where fitted, so the squad sits down and buckles up.

Tournaments and away trips over several days
Multi-day events have a useful exception. On one occasional trip the driver can push the weekly rest back by up to 12 days, and since 2024 that covers domestic trips as well as foreign ones. A tournament week can therefore keep one driver and one vehicle from the first game to the final, as long as each day's driving and rest stay legal.
Send the fixture list with kick-off times and training slots. The operator plans driving and rest around them, and a long transfer on a rest day can be kept apart from the match-day shuttles.
Rules the group organiser needs
- Category D covers vehicles built to carry more than eight passengers besides the driver; D1 covers vehicles for up to 16 passengers and up to 8 m long
- Buses may drive at up to 100 km/h on motorways and 90 km/h on other roads outside built-up areas, or 80 km/h if passengers are standing or the bus has no seat belts
Match days at the big grounds
Stadium days change the roads. In Madrid, some coach bays are closed during events at the stadiums and the Las Ventas bullring. In Barcelona, FC Barcelona is back at the Spotify Camp Nou at reduced capacity while works go on, so check access for each event. Real Zaragoza plays at the temporary Ibercaja Estadio for the 2025-26 and 2026-27 seasons. Sponsor names change often, so give the venue name printed on the ticket.
What organisers ask us
Can the same driver stay with us for a ten-day tournament?
Usually. The 12-day exception for occasional trips allows it, provided each day's limits are respected.
Can supporters travel on the team coach?
That is your choice. The coach is hired whole, so any spare seats are yours to fill, up to the seat count.
Are race weekends at Jerez busy for coaches?
Yes. When the Circuito de Jerez hosts world-championship motorcycle racing, roads, hotels and coach parking around Jerez are in heavy demand, so book early and allow extra time.
