Alicante Coach Hire: Castle, Coast and Airport
One rule shapes most coach days in Alicante: a full-size coach cannot drive up to the castle. Once the group knows to take the lifts, the city is straightforward, with the airport close and the Costa Blanca within an hour.
Santa Bárbara castle: take the lifts
The access road starts at the Calle Vázquez de Mella and admits taxis, service vehicles, and minibuses within 8.50 m and 6,800 kg. Nothing larger. Coach groups ride up inside the mountain in the lifts, whose entrance faces the Postiguet beach on the Avenida de Juan Bautista Lafora; the alternative is the walk.
Entry to the castle closes 40 minutes before closing time. Set the coach pick-up by the lifts with that in mind.

The centre and the old quarter
Alicante's low-emission zone has applied since 1 January 2025 and works in rings. Only the inner ring, the Casco Antiguo, has real limits: residents, garage owners and authorised vehicles, as before. Elsewhere there are no permanent restrictions; temporary ones can be switched on during high-pollution episodes.
No official coach set-down points are listed, so the operator names one at booking. The Explanada, the MARQ archaeological museum, the Santa Cruz quarter and the Basílica de Santa María are best on foot. Around 20 to 24 June each year, the Hogueras de San Juan close streets in the centre.

Coach access and parking rules in Alicante
- Alicante-Elche airport (ALC, Miguel Hernández) is about 16 km by road from the Ayuntamiento, about 25 min by coach in light traffic. Valencia airport (VLC) is about 188 km (about 2 h 35 min).
- Castillo de Santa Bárbara: the road up (from the Calle Vázquez de Mella) is open only to taxis, minibuses up to 8.50 m long and 6,800 kg, and service vehicles, so full-size coaches cannot drive up. Coach groups use the lifts from the Avenida de Juan Bautista Lafora, opposite the Postiguet beach, or walk up. Entry to the castle closes 40 minutes before closing time.
- Alicante is also a cruise port; it is not one of the four cruise ports covered on this site.
- Low-emission zone (ZBE): the ordinance has applied since 1 January 2025 and is built in rings. Only the innermost ring, the Casco Antiguo, has real limits: it was already restricted to residents, garage owners and authorised vehicles, and that rule continues. In the rest of the city there are no permanent restrictions and no enforcement; temporary restrictions can be switched on only during high-pollution episodes. Check before travel.
- The Hogueras de San Juan (Fogueres de Sant Joan) festival fills the city around 20 to 24 June each year, with street closures in the centre.
- No official list of coach set-down points or coach parks was found: the operator confirms the stopping point when booking.
Airport and hotel areas
Alicante-Elche airport is actually in Elche's municipality, some 16 km from the Ayuntamiento, roughly 25 minutes by coach. Aena publishes no coach pick-up point. Tour-operator desks are mainly downstairs on floor -2 (one more sits in the arrivals hall), so agree the meeting point. Hotels are in the centre, on the Postiguet and San Juan beaches, and near the airport at Torrellano. Valencia airport is about 188 km away, roughly 2 h 35 min.
The Costa Blanca and inland
Santa Pola, for the boat to Tabarca, and the Palmeral of Elche are each about 35 minutes away. Benidorm takes about 50 minutes, Altea an hour, Guadalest 1 h 10 min. Murcia is 1 h 15 min and Cartagena 1 h 50 min. Valencia is the long one at about 2 h 30 min.
What organisers ask us
Can a minibus drive up to the castle?
Yes, within the limits: 8.50 m in length and 6,800 kg in weight. Tell the operator early so a vehicle within those limits is booked.
Is the airport in Alicante?
It is in the municipality of Elche, south-west of Alicante, and its full name is Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández. The drive to the centre is about 25 minutes.
Is the Alicante cruise port covered?
Alicante is a cruise port, but it is not one of the four ports with a page on this site. Send the ship and times with your request.
