Granada Coach Hire Around the Alhambra
Most groups come to Granada for the Alhambra, and the Alhambra runs to the clock. Every ticket carries a fixed time for the Nasrid Palaces. Plan the coach around that time, not the other way round.
The Nasrid Palaces time sets the day
Miss the palace slot and the group loses the right to enter them. Groups are capped at 30 people, teachers or leaders included, and tourist groups must be led by a licensed guide. Above six people everyone uses a wireless guiding system. A coach of 50 is therefore two Alhambra groups, each with its own guide and time.
Tickets are personal and may be checked against an original identity document, so every traveller carries one. On the day, the ticket offices sell only for that date, and only what is left, so book well ahead. A full visit takes about three hours.

Coach park P-4 and the road up
The Alhambra runs its own guarded car park, open 24 hours. Coaches have their own area there, P-4, the first you come to; P-1 is kept for adapted vehicles. Drivers come in on the ring road towards Motril and follow the Alhambra signs via the Ronda Sur. That road and the monument's grounds lie outside the low-emission zone.

Coach access and parking rules in Granada
- Federico García Lorca Granada-Jaén Airport (GRX) is about 19 km by road from the centre (Plaza Isabel la Católica), about 30 min in light traffic. Málaga-Costa del Sol (AGP) is about 137 km (about 2 h 15 min). Journeys take longer at peak times.
- Granada's low-emission zone (ZBE) is fully in force since 1 October 2025, 24 hours a day, every day. It covers about 23.5 km², essentially the whole built-up city; the ring road (GR-30, Circunvalación), the Ronda Sur (A-395), Merced Alta (A-4006) and the Avenida Santa María de la Alhambra are outside it, and so are the Alhambra grounds, so the route to the monument and its car park stays open.
- In the Granada ZBE, vehicles with label 0, ECO, C or B may enter from anywhere, and vehicles with a tax address in Granada may enter whatever their label. Regular and discretionary buses and minibuses are listed among the vehicles with free access that need no authorisation. Cars and vans without a label from outside Granada may not enter. These rules are current in October 2026; check them before travel.
- Spanish low-emission zones use the DGT environmental label (distintivo ambiental): 0 EMISIONES, ECO, C and B; vehicles without a label are classed "A". For vehicles with more than 8 passenger seats and heavy vehicles, label C generally goes to vehicles registered from 2014 and label B to those registered from 2006. Vehicles registered abroad have no DGT label, and each city treats them in its own way (see the notes for each city).
- The Albaicín, the Realejo and parts of the centre are restricted-access areas (zonas de acceso restringido) controlled by cameras, and their streets are too narrow for coaches. Groups walk up, take the city minibuses, or use a small vehicle where the operator has the access permit.
- Granada station has high-speed trains to Madrid and to Barcelona; the bus station is on the north side of the city (Carretera de Jaén).
- Speed limits for buses and coaches (Reglamento General de Circulación, art. 48.1.a): 100 km/h on motorways (autopistas and autovías) and 90 km/h on conventional roads. Vehicles doing school transport or carrying minors drive 10 km/h below those limits (art. 48.1.b), and a bus carrying standing passengers or without seat belts may not exceed 80 km/h on any road outside built-up areas.
- Seat belts must be worn wherever they are fitted, including in coaches (Reglamento General de Circulación, art. 117.1). In vehicles with more than nine seats including the driver, passengers must be told that belts are compulsory, by the driver, the guide or the group leader, by audiovisual means or by signs at each seat (art. 117.2).
- EU drivers' hours rules (Regulation (EC) No 561/2006) apply to coach drivers: at most 9 hours of driving a day (10 hours twice a week), a 45-minute break after 4.5 hours of driving and at least 11 hours of daily rest. Long day trips are planned around these limits.
- Some Spanish motorways are toll roads (autopistas de peaje, usually numbered AP-); the operator plans the route.
Albaicín and the city centre
Granada's ZBE covers almost the whole city at all hours, but regular and discretionary buses and minibuses are on its free-access list and need no authorisation. That was the position in October 2026; the operator looks again before your dates.
Cameras guard access to the Albaicín, the Realejo and some central streets, and those lanes are far too tight for a coach anyway. For the Mirador de San Nicolás a group climbs on foot, rides the city minibuses, or uses a small vehicle where the operator holds an access permit.
Mountains, caves and the coast
Pradollano in the Sierra Nevada is about 55 minutes away, Guadix and its cave houses about an hour. Pampaneira in the Alpujarras takes about 1 h 30 min on winding roads. Nerja is about 1 h 25 min; Cordoba takes about 2 h 40 min and Malaga about 2 h 5 min.
What organisers ask us
Which airport serves Granada?
Federico García Lorca Granada-Jaén, about 19 km from the centre, roughly 30 minutes. The covered car park beside the terminal is only 2.5 m high, too low for a coach, so the pick-up point is agreed with the operator. Málaga-Costa del Sol is about 2 h 15 min away.
Can we buy Alhambra tickets on the day?
Only same-day tickets, if any remain. For a group that is too big a gamble, so book ahead.
Do school groups follow the same rules?
Yes. The 30-person cap counts the teachers. The trip itself also falls under the school transport rules of Real Decreto 443/2001 when most passengers are under 16.
